Hello! Welcome to Art & Food Justice, a website dedicated to exhibiting the role that art plays in food justice. However you ended up here, I hope you'll stick around a bit and find out something new.
For a little background... My name is Ella and I'm a junior at the University of Vermont. Up until mid-January of 2018, I majored in Environmental Studies and minored in Food Systems and French. Halfway through my junior year (smart, right?), I decided to change my major to Studio Art, and switch my minors to Environmental Studies and French. What all of that tells us is that 1) I'm very interested in food and the environment, 2) I love art, and 3) I like change. This website started out of a pre-thesis-independent study-type project that I am working on for the Honors College at UVM. I have found that not many resources exist that connect art with food justice, and have thus decided to explore this relationship further. My goals for Art & Food Justice (AFJ) are as follows: · To create a space that allows for the sharing of food justice-related artworks, · To inform the general public about key food justice issues and ways that art has and will help these issues, · To publish my food justice-themes artworks, · And to establish a art/food systems community. Although I have studied food and the environment for a while now, and have been passionate about art for practically my entire life, I don't know everything about these fields and I won't ever pretend that I do. When publishing my research on my blog, I will do my best to always cite sources and obtain a variety of view points. Like with all justice movements, the solutions are never one-sided. It's important to not just include works and opinions from fellow white, middle-classed Americans, but also discuss the role that art has played in global food justice movements in urban areas, peasant farming communities, wealthy regions, etc. I understand a lot of these issues that I will present will be controversial. I am always open for discussion about these topics so please feel free to contact me. Additionally, if you have artwork to submit or questions/comments/concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm excited for what this website has in store and I hope you are, too! |
